No heart for bees…

At the request of Diakonie, a farmer in Castrop-Rauxel made 1/2 hectare of his land available so that slightly handicapped workers could carry out a project there in preparation for their second job market.

The site was enclosed with a wooden picket fence and a vegetable patch was planted.
In addition, an insect hotel was set up as a nature conservation measure and a strip of wild meadow was created to make it “round” and meet the needs of bees and insects.
Passers-by were asked on a banner to protect this strip and not to enter it.

Oh, and to meet the needs of the employees, a mobile (and handicapped-accessible) mobile toilet was also set up.

A small natural paradise and great project was created here.

Until the city of Castrop-Rauxel came onto the scene.
They obviously saw this as an illegal construction of “illegal buildings” and demanded the immediate dismantling of the fencing, the mobile toilet, the insect hotel and the “advertising banner” for the bee meadow under threat of fines.

What a pity. We can only hope that the clerks at the building authority can do without their honey in the morning … and never find themselves in the position of having to find a way into the second job market with so little understanding for what is actually a very beautiful, humane and nature conservation idea.
